Justin stood perfectly still in the darkness.
His forearms rested on the lobbyâs cold counter.
Not even the faintest bit of moonlight escaped through the glass entrance doors and windows. His heart raced. He felt something coming toward him.
His phone buzzed.
He answered.
âAre you okay?â Anna asked from the other end.
âFine,â Justin said.
âI think a fuse may have blown. Can you check the basement?â
Justin despised that idea. âLetâs wait outside until it returns.â
âJustin, Iâm serious,â his mom commanded.
âUgh, canât Asher do it?â
ââ¦No. Call me when you get it back on.â Anna hung up.
Justin groaned.
He turned his cellphone flashlight on. He grumbled about how stupid this was and wished he had time to put on his GoPro.
He pressed the elevator button. It didnât work either. The outage mustâve affected everything in the hotel. He entered the stairwell and shined his light down the gap between the stair sets.
Justin shivered briefly for no reason. He took one step at a time.
He continued his descent. He blinked, seeing the woman in green appear in front of him. Blood poured from her neck. Her eyes were cocked and partly rolled back. Her legs were bowed. The vision ended in a flash.
Justin shook his head rapidly. He whispered, âItâs not real. Itâs not real.â
Heâd taken the cowardâs way out last night. He swore he saw a woman die, but the evidence was against him. Part of him believed he was insane. Another part believed McKenzieâs testimony. Maybe weâre both crazy, Justin thought. He continued to the bottom of the stairs and unlocked the door to the basement corridor.
The more he thought about it, the more he believed he witnessed a real murder. There were secret tunnels all around the hotel. The killer couldâve stashed the body inside and the police would be none the wiser. What if it was the killer that cut the power? Justin swallowed a glob of spit. If heâs here, this ends tonight.
Full of fear and determination, he pushed open the door and entered the basement. His light beam only revealed twenty feet in front of him. The heavy door shut behind him, locking from the outside. He could still leave, but no one could enter without the key.
As he walked, he felt a sudden wave of cold. The hairs on his arms stood. He heard a soft whisper, but the words were lost, indistinguishable.
Mustering his courage, he shouted. âI hear you! Come out!â
His voice reverberated through the dark corridor.
He continued deeper. One hand stayed on his concealed pocket knife. The moment the killer or spirit got close, heâd cut them.
He blinked, seeing a millisecond vision of a woman being beaten by a shadowy assailant.
Justin trembled.
He went eight more feet.
His foot splashed in something. He shined the light down on the crimson puddle.
He cursed and jolted back. His light shined over the walls that were now splattered with gallons of blood.
The image disappeared a second later.
He drew out the knife and held it in his shaking hand. He continued forward.
Adrenaline raced through his veins.
He felt something tugging at the back of his shirt.
